Intro

I love massively multiplayer (MMO) games and I love real-time strategy (RTS) games. Fuse them together into one free-to-play game and you have Evony - a free MMORTS.

Basically, you create your own kingdom and compete with other players, or non-player characters, for resources and prestige. You can horde resources, expand into a multi-city empire, or run a massive alliance of players.

This is a persistent game, which means when you log off your kingdom continues collecting resources and in-game events continue to happen.

Game Features

You can develop and run multiple cities as your rank grows.

You can research technologies to improve your kingdom.

Every day you earn an Aries Amulet. You can use this to "spin the wheel" for a prize. The prizes range from soldiers, gold, and production upgrades to heroes and resources.

Every player also gets a newbie package which has a bunch of handy items like medals and production upgrades.

Starting Out

Ok, so by now you have registered and chosen a server to call home. So what should you do? Start building!

You will need cottages to expand your population, develop resource fields so you can build, and begin to piece together an army. Now, since you are new you will enjoy 7-days of peace where more powerful players cannot attack you (you cannot attack either). This is really useful because in those 7-days you can really become formidable.

Character Screen

In the picture above you can see the character screen which lists your name, the server name (and time), your alliance name (if any), prestige score, rank, honor and other important information.

City Screen

The picture above shows the city panel which contains the city's name, location, gold, population, and resources. You can also view the heroes that call the city home, your army, and your defenses.

Kingdom Resources include:

  • Gold
  • Food
  • Wood
  • Stone
  • Iron

Next to each icon you will see a number (in black) - that is how much of that resource you currently have. The number in green is how much you are generating. If that number is red, it means you are running a deficit and you will want to increase production of that resource.

Menu and Social Screen

In the menu you will find:

  • Shop - Buy items or game coins. (both totally optional)
  • Alliance - Find, create and join an alliance or view yours.
  • Quest - View quests and turn in for rewards.
  • Reports - Messages from trading, scouting or attacking.
  • Forum - Socialize with other Evony players.
  • Contact - Self-explanatory.
  • Statistics - Player scores, heroes, alliances and more.
  • Mail - Read and send mail.

The chat box features channels for new players, the entire server, your alliance, and private conversations.

Alliances

Why should you join an alliance? Easy - protection and friendship.

Your alliance should help protect you if you are getting targeted a lot. A good alliance is also social. If you have ever played other online games such as World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings, or Command & Conquer, you have a good idea of the value of teaming up with other players.

5 Helpful Tips for Beginners

  • Build up your lumbermills. Wood is the most important resource.
  • Then build up your quarries because stone is the second most important resource.
  • Make sure you have enough cottages to support your resource fields!
  • Don't neglect warehouses! You need to protect your resources from plundering!
  • Save your slow upgrades for when you are sleeping so they are ready when you're online during the day.

Lumber is no longer the most valued resource, as the latest changes to npc villages you plunder no longer provide incredible amounts of food. On server 1, where I've played since three days after beta launch, food is more expensive than lumber. ;-)

Prices fluctuate all the time. I've been playing since the beta too and it just depends on the day which resource is most valued. Thanks for droppin' by and leaving a comment! :)

Great step by step review, i'm not convinced on the 5 helpful tips though.

Food is more important than lumber. Warehouses aren't neeeded, and take a spot that barracks could go in.

I whole heartedly agree with saving your long upgrades till you're ready to go to bed so they're built by the time you wake up. I love that strategy.

The original commenter is an idiot.

Barbarians still provide more food than all other resources combined. That means food is always plentiful if you have a few ballistas.

As far as food being more expensive than lumber I play on a 4 servers and food is still one of the cheapest resources. Even on a server that is several months old.

If I build 80% lumber mills I have plenty of lumber to sell. 1 lumber is almost always worth at least 2 food. By making lots of lumber mills I am able to have 2x as much food as if I built farms.

The only people who need farms and food are people who don't play very often and are not on enough to regularly buy/sell at market or attack barbs every 8 hours.

Iron is the most expensive on the market, then lumber is second, then food, then stone on Server 33. Or Ss3. If you make a second city, i would suggest making a lumber city because its easier to make more mills cause it doesnt take as much work force as Iron Mills.

Hitting NPCs for resource is your best bet (apart from attacking another player and taking theirs) using correct amount of ballista and transporters to retrieve the 'loot' (resource:food, lumber etc) with a good 'attack' hero. Having a hero with good 'politics' level helps too. If you have a large army, you need to feed them often or they go into 'refuge' and die and also lead to more mayhem within your city. Accumulating gold from plundering, or selling excess resource means you are able to buy/sell specific resource at your city market. Leaving resource and gold lying around if you are not that strong, will make you a target for stronger players and alliances.

Don't be fooled... Stone is the least valuable of all the resources. You'll need only 1 quarry starting out to help build walls. First concentrate on Farms (for food) then Sawmills (lumber) then Iron mines (iron). Build them (and improve them) alternately, as early in the game you'll want all 3 to build up troops (maybe emphasize on lumber to build archer's towers for your wall). Happy gaming!
